History Never Repeats: The Best of Split Enz - A&M Records, 1987
“I don't know why sometimes I get frightened You can see my eyes, you can tell that I'm not lying” —from I Got You, lyrics by Neil Finn
History Never Repeats: The Best of Split Enz distills Split Enz at their sharpest—art-rock edge meeting new wave pop craft. Like Squeeze, the songs are finely built, with articulate, often ironic lyrics. The set traces a clear evolution—from the taut, punchy I Got You to the lush, sophisticated Message to My Girl. It’s a rare compilation that captures not just hits, but growth.
Their breakthrough hit, I Got You, opens with a sharp guitar stab, creating instant tension that unfolds into a nervy, taut groove with an explosive chorus—arguably their signature moment. Six Months in a Leaky Boat, a personal favourite, is a buoyant, surreal voyage masking deeper unease. Side One closes with I See Red, pure, cathartic fury—fast, jagged, and thrillingly unhinged.
On Side Two, the narrative deepens, moving from the punchy immediacy of I Got You into more reflective terrain. Message to My Girl unfolds with tender sophistication, while History Never Repeats blends irony and inevitability, capturing the band’s growing emotional and musical maturity. Together, these tracks show Split Enz evolving from sharp new-wave hooks to artful, resonant storytelling.
Also revealed is the tension and magic between two distinct writers: Tim Finn’s theatrical, quirky art-pop alongside Neil Finn’s melodic, emotionally direct style. Tim is angular, witty, and slightly surreal; Neil is introspective, precise, and melodic. Together, they create a dialogue of intellect versus feeling, theatre versus intimacy—showing how opposing voices can come together to create something timeless.
History Never Repeats is a top-tier greatest hits comparable to the very best of the era. It cemented Split Enz as one of the most important bands ever to come out of New Zealand and serves as a bridge to Crowded House, where Neil would reach global heights.
Back in the day, few greatest-hits albums captured a band’s growth so clearly. Which albums have you heard that do this as brilliantly as History Never Repeats?

Like Johnny, I’ve been a Split Enz fan from the jump. They were quite a different band from what you hear on this collection. Neil didn’t join until 3 albums in. It was Tim’s band (not to slight the other members, who deserve equal billing), and when younger brother Neil entered the picture, the experimental/prog elements moved to the background in favor of pop smarts. This is an excellent collection of the Neil years.
I've been a fan of them from the get-go, partly because they were mentored by Roxy Music and Phil Manzanera (Split Enz members appear on Phil's solo albums). Their 2nd album was mixed by Geoff Emerick and capture the wackier side of a Beatles sound. Check out "My Mistake."
