I absolutely love The Who Sell Out! For all the reasons you mentioned.

I once had dreams of starting an all-female band who played like The Who! :) With that same kind of unleashed abandon.

Well ... I've done other creative things, since. :)

That would have been one cool band! But it’s awesome that you’ve done other creative things - and so many of them! Cheers!

Cheers for that! I should blog more about my "musician years," as I like to think of my late teens/early 20s. It was an interesting time. :)

Yes, your musician years would be fascinating, and it is a joy of writing to get to relive and think about the past, especially those formative, interesting times.

Thunderous drums? Uh, how about explosive? As in gunpowder:

Probably my favourite Who album, likely because it has a bit of a Kinks feel to it; as you say, a mix of satire, concept & power

I love the Kinks too!

Great write up Alex as usual. How about Welcome to my nightmare?

Thanks for your kind words! Yes, ‘Welcome to My Nightmare’ is a great example. A very cool concept album with catchy, hard-rocking tunes. I wrote about that one a while back: https://open.substack.com/pub/vinylhour/p/vinyl-hour-3c3?utm_campaign=post-expanded-share&utm_medium=web

I agree wholeheartedly that these are "magical power pop creations" that are both "playful and subversive." What could be better than that?

Yes, very cool!
